I Don’t Understand How We Got Here

I’ve tried to write this article since Election Night. I’ve started and stopped several times, each time thinking that I’ve managed to gather my thoughts in such a way that this will come out calm and coherent. That may or may not be the case, we’ll see by the time we get to the end of this.

My disdain for our 45th President is no secret. I was a Bernie-bro, but like a good Democrat I supported Hillary because she was the party’s nominee and there was no way I could support any other candidate. My criticisms of President Trump were loud and boisterous; my defenses of Hillary, not as much, though I still believe that she would’ve been better for this country than President Trump. On every level.

I grew up knowing that you show the Office of the President respect. Since I have been old enough I’m batting .500 on supporting the winning candidate, but I always at least respected the candidates who won that I didn’t support. Not a fan of either Bush but I didn’t think they would destroy the fabric of what makes this country great. I didn’t think they would fleece us or turn us into a Russian colony. They didn’t make me as angry as this President does and he hasn’t even had a full day on the job yet.

For the life of me, I’ll never understand how this:

didn’t bring about the immediate end of his candidacy.

I don’t understand how the Access Hollywood tape didn’t do it, nor the comments about the judge in his fraud case, nor the scores of women who came forward to accuse him of sexual misconduct.

I don’t understand how we’re OK with not seeing his taxes and who he is in debt to .

I don’t understand how we’re OK with him smack talking and snubbing our allies but constantly kissing Putin’s ass.

I don’t understand how we’re OK with him denigrating war heroes and civil rights icons.

I don’t understand how we’re OK with him jumping up and down for 8 years claiming that President Obama wasn’t a citizen but we don’t immediately shout him down when he starts complaining about “fake news” that isn’t fake.

I don’t understand how we’re OK with him doing the exact opposite of “Drain The Swamp” and we’re not all converging on The Capitol with pitchforks and torches.

I plan to spend however long President Trump is in office being a voice against him. I plan to exercise my rights. I plan to participate. I plan to stand up for those who can’t.

If he gets his way, we really are going to need to Make America Great Again. Maybe we should just put all that effort into taking care of one another now rather than waiting until it will be much more painful and expensive.

Join me. We can do this…together. Get out and join a group. Join a march. Run for office.  Call and write your Representatives and Senators. Make them hear you. Make them pay attention to you. Support real journalism and help the Fourth Estate keep our politicians honest.

It’s going to take all of us. It’s going to take an effort this country hasn’t seen in generations.

This is real. Donald Trump is going to be sworn in as President of the United States. It’s time for us to focus, listen, watch and act.

We can do this.

  1. I look forward to reading these. I’ve always been respectfully quiet about my political views but this election has turned me loud and proud. America got it wrong this time. This isn’t about different views politically. This is serious and could have lasting effects for years to come. We must stay diligent, things will need to be done. I’m putting a lot of faith in people doing the right thing. That being said, I did the same thing with the election and look how that turned out!
